Para subwoofers

The first big project for Boulder was a pair of giant subwoofers for the club I used to work at, PARA Breda. The existing sound system seriously lacked bass. I convinced many people by bringing my Yellowstone cabinets and setting them up as subwoofers. Even with their limited sound pressure they added the much needed low end. Hence arose a question to me to build two ultimate subwoofers. I decided on using 2 18" drivers, I calculated the enclosures at 240 liters and the cabinets would have 4 pieces 11 cm bass ports in it.
The construction was mainly done by one person: the doorman, who doubled as an in-house handyman. You know: the type of guy to knock down a wall with his little finger. But me and a friend lended 4 hands (and a sleepless night). I built the 19" rack that would hold 3 amplifiers, a crossover and a switching system. The controls for the crossover were blocked by a grille to prevent unauthorized access.
The cabinets were built from 22 and 40 mm thick sheet of waterproof hardwood plywood, and a 80 kg concrete slab was poured into the bottom of the cabs. Because of the concrete it's nearly impossible to tilt them over from the ledges they're on, which could result in serious injury. A foam sheet sits in front of the speakers which in turn is covered by a steel grille. Unfortunately the beautiful 18" speakers aren't visible, but at least they're protected from spurious beer throwing parties.
The cabinets were connected with heavy 10mm2 wire to a 2x600W Master amplifier. The dbx crossover was set to 100 Hz.
